Description de l'évenement

Hold Mommy’s Cigarette, Welland, September 10 & 11, 2016

Niagara’s own Shelley Marshall will be back in Welland to kick of the fall tour of her award winning show ‘Hold Mommy’s Cigarette’. Her true story aims to destroy the stigma around mental illness as Marshall takes her audience through the ups, downs and hilarious moments of growing up the 70’s and 80’s in what was to her, a “normal family”. After performing to a standing ovation of over 600 in back in January, Marshall was asked to return to do a fundraiser for Women’s Place of South Niagara. Her immediate response? “I would be honored. If only there had been a place like that for my Momma to have gone to back then”

There are no intermissions in this one-woman show and all costume changes are done on stage as Marshall re-lives her life story from the perspective of 5 different characters. At one point in this brilliantly orchestrated performance, the audience witnesses a tender embrace between young Shelley and her mother as Marshall plays both roles simultaneously.

No doubt this performance will hold personal profoundness as Marshall remembers her own father, whose mental health resulted in suicide. "I believe Suicide is the result of Stage 4 depression” says Marshall
Mayor Jim Diodatti along with several mayors in the Niagara Region have joined the global movement in proclaiming September 10th as International Suicide Prevention Day.”
